custom commercial door upgrade for historical building

CUSTOM HARDWARE AND RETROFITTING LOCKS IN A HIGH SECURITY ENVIRONMENT

See how Door Resources matched 550 new locks and hardware sets to the existing doors of this century old historic courthouse.

The facilities manager at the US Court of Appeals in Atlanta came to us with a complicated issue of the original, century old locks failing on over 550 doors at this historic building. We worked with Schlage and FR International to design a heavy duty Schlage mortise lock coupled with custom knobs by FR International to match the design and finish of the existing locks which are no longer in production.

The biggest challenge we faced was the installation process because the doors where over 100 years old and the lock preparations were done by hand with a hammer and chisel. We used a special mortising router and jig to re-prep all 550 historic doors for modern locks. This created a clean, perfect pocket in each door for the new locks. The final result being that this historic facility was fitted with new locks without detracting from the original design of the building.

One of the other challenges of this project is that the USCOA is a high security federal facility with many additional codes and guidelines to meet. We had five employees apply for and receive Federal Courts badging to work on-site. It was about a 3 month process with countless forms, fingerprinting and background checks to get the ability to access the building.

We pride ourselves in having some of the best technicians in the industry and we are licensed and fully insured. Our lead locksmith on this project was Ryan Wood. His time in the Army really helped him navigate some of the nuances required when working in this government facility. His ability to accommodate a flexible installation schedule and reduced noise levels in certain areas of the building made this project go smooth, on time and on budget without hindering the normal daily activities at the court house. We continue to provide service for this property and maintain our commitment to security, access control and reliability.
